Pre-close framing guide
Framing Inspection Checklist Before Insulation and Drywall
Once insulation and board are installed, correcting framing is slower and more expensive. A deliberate pre-close review protects the next trades and creates a useful record of what is inside the walls.
Confirm the approved layout
Compare wall locations, door openings, stairs, shafts and ceiling drops with the current drawings—not an obsolete site print. Check critical dimensions from fixed building elements and confirm rooms still meet clearance and accessibility requirements.
Review load paths and connections
Verify bearing points, posts, beams, hangers, straps, blocking and hold-downs against the structural information. Confirm fastener type and quantity where specified. Field alterations to trusses, engineered joists or structural members require review by the responsible designer or supplier.
Check straightness, plumb and openings
Sight long walls and ceilings, check corners and confirm rough openings for doors, windows and access panels. Review tolerances before finishes magnify a framing issue. At exterior walls, look for gaps or details that could interfere with air, moisture or thermal control layers.
Coordinate services and backing
Confirm that plumbing, wiring, ducts and sprinkler work have suitable routes and protective plates where required. Locate backing for cabinets, rails, televisions, washroom accessories and specialty fixtures. Photograph backing with a tape measure or identifiable grid before it disappears.
Verify fire, sound and envelope details
Check fire blocking, draft stopping, rated-wall continuity and head details required by the project. Acoustic walls need the correct separation, insulation space and perimeter treatment. Do not assume drywall or sealant will correct missing framing components later.
Close only after the checkpoints
- Required framing and rough-in inspections are complete.
- Deficiencies are documented, assigned and corrected.
- Moisture-damaged or contaminated materials are replaced.
- Photos identify framing, backing and concealed services.
- The next trade has confirmed the substrate is ready.
A signed checklist is most useful when it names the area, date, drawing revision and reviewer. It is not a substitute for required municipal or professional inspections; it is the field-control step that makes those inspections and the final finish more predictable.
